BY THE TIME we make it to the end of the pedestrian tunnel I’m feeling a little better. My genitals still feel like a dump truck’s run over them but I manage to remove my remaining hand from that area which I’m hoping helps with the whole sex-crazed simian look. And somehow I’m exquisitely conscious of Mags’ arm around my waist, the pressure of her slender body against mine. I don’t know how many times I’ve boosted her through the hatch onto the roof of the mess building but somehow this feels deliciously new, and yet at the same familiar. She feels the way I think I had always known she would feel, but this is the first time I remember thinking about her like this.

We stop when we get to Front Street. I think I could probably walk by myself now but I keep my arm draped around her shoulder. After we pass the mess she makes to go right, towards Juvie Row and the dorms. Because I don’t want it to end I blurt out:

‘Want to head up on the roof?’

It’s way after curfew, although I suspect it’ll be a few hours before Angus and Hamish think about venturing out again. Still, after all that’s happened today I should be longing for the safety of my cell. But excitement is a rare and addictive commodity in Eden, and right now I feel awake, alive, more alive than I’ve ever felt. Somehow I think it has as much to do with being here with Mags than any of the other things that have happened to me today.

Mags only hesitates for a moment before she turns us back towards the mess. I check there’s no one on Front Street while she gently turns the latch handle. There’s a soft clunk as the mechanism bites and then we’re in, making our way down the narrow metal corridor towards the back stairs. The stairway’s too narrow for both of us so Mags goes first, padding silently up the stairs ahead of me. I follow, more slowly, lifting my leg gingerly with each step. When I get to the third floor landing she’s already undone the hex bolts on the access panel and is pulling herself up into the crawl space without waiting for my help. I follow her up.

When we get out onto the roof Mags heads for her usual spot over by the corner. I choose a place as close as my nerve will allow, a little further back from the edge. The plastic bottles in my overalls threaten to jab me in the crotch as I lower myself gently into a sitting position next to her. I take them out and set them on the roof between us.

‘What’re those?’

I explain to her that I bring back stuff like this for Quartermaster and Scudder. Mags looks at me for a second like she’s just learned something new but she can’t decide whether it’s a good or a bad thing. Then she reaches for the quart of Fireball and picks it up.
